Women’s Big Bash League 2019
The Australian Women’s Domestic Twenty20 Competition is now known as the Women’s Big Bash League and is organised in the last quarter of every year. The tournament was earlier known as the Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup but was renamed as the Women’s Big Bash League in 2015. There have been 8 seasons of the Australian Women’s Domestic Twenty20 Cup and 4 seasons of the Women’s Big Bash League so far.

The 2019 Season

The Women’s Big Bash League 2019 is scheduled to be held from 18 October 2019 to 8 December 2019, with all the 8 franchise teams playing in the tournament. The names of the teams are similar to those with the teams of the Men’s Big Bash League with only a suffix Women after the team name. The 2019 edition of the tournament will be the fifth edition of the tournament and will feature various female cricketers from around the World.

Women’s Big Bash League Teams

A total of 8 teams participate in the league, with at least one representing each state. Both Sydney & Melbourne have two teams in the league with both of them playing on different home grounds. The names of the participating teams are Adelaide Strikers Women, Sydney Sixers Women, Brisbane Heat Women, Sydney Thunders Women, Hobart Hurricanes Women, Melbourne Stars Women, Perth Scorchers Women & Melbourne Renegades Women.

Tournament Format

The Women’s Big Bash League is played in a double round robin format, with each team playing every other team twice, once at home ground and once at away grounds. The top four teams at the end of the round robin stage compete in the semifinals and the finals take place. Between the semifinals and the final, a match for third place is played as well.

Previous Seasons

The tournament started in 2015-16 and Sydney Sixers Women and Sysdney Thunders Women battled for the inaugural title. However, the Thunders managed to win the match by 3 wickets and became the inaugural winners of the League.

In the 2016-17 season, the Sydney Thunders failed to qualify for the knockouts and Sydney Sixers Women and Perth Scorchers Women made it to the finals with the Sixers clinching the trophy and their inaugural title. The same teams qualified for the finals of the 2017-18 season as well, and ironically the same result – a victory for the Sydney Sixers Women came about.

In the 2018-19 season, the Sixers met Brisbane Heat women in finals and defeated them by 3 wickets, thereby marking an end to the winning streak of Sydney Sixers in the League. However, the Sudney Sixers Women still remain the only team to play every final of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Prior to 2015, the Australian Domestic Twenty20 Competition is known as the Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup, which comprised 7 teams and had a single round-robin format. The tournament did not feature any final match in 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, and only five teams played in the tournament – representing five states.

2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons ended up being played between Victoria and New South Wales, with Victoria Women winning each final after having finished second in the points table.

The 2012-13 season saw a new champion being crowned at the league and New South Wales won its first title by defeating Western Australia. Queensland won the 2013-14 season and the final season was won by New South Wales, which defeated Victoria again in the finals.
